Careers

Nurturing Talent Requires the Right Growing Conditions

United Machinists is building the next generation of precision manufacturers for the world's leading aerospace, medical and defence companies. We're looking for people who want to learn, solve hard problems and be part of work that matters. From precision machining and programming through to inspection, automation and production support. Are you mission-ready?

Machining and Engineering Roles

We’re on a mission, so there’s no room for passengers. Every person on our team has a direct stake in the work we do. The components we produce have real consequences.

Most shops separate programming and operating. At United Machinists, our technical leaders do both. They understand the machines and the programmes running them, and that’s what keeps quality consistent and problems solved early.

Cadet pathways and apprenticeships with United Machinists

Being here for the long haul means backing people to grow. United Machinists provides cadetship and apprenticeship opportunities through Gateway placements, summer internships and recognised industry training pathways.

Work experience

United Machinists supports Otago Polytechnic by providing work-experience placement opportunities for students enrolled in industry training courses, such as a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Those who take part in this receive valuable hands-on experience in the workshop, putting theory into practice in a real-world environment.

United Machinists Cadetship

The United Machinists Cadetship is a four-year, fully sponsored programme that culminates in a Bachelor of Engineering Technology.

The programme is run in partnership between Otago Polytechnic and United Machinists and is an exciting opportunity to combine classroom learning with real-world industry experience.

You will work and learn alongside capable teammates, using modern technology and real client challenges, developing skills that help build mission-critical components for New Zealand and global supply chains.

Industry Gateway placements

The High School Industry Gateway programme is a structured, Government-funded work experience initiative that allows Year 11–13 students to "test drive" potential careers while still studying. Students gain hands-on, real-world industry experience one day a week while working toward NCEA credits and recognised vocational qualifications.

Candidates can find out more by contacting their high school careers counsellor.
